itching
Question:
does anyone have itching all over? legs, arms, back ,you name it. diving me crazy at night just started about 6 months ago I’m not taking treatment for my hep c and don’t take any meds I found out I had hepc thru work exam about 10 yrs ago probably got it yrs ago though don’t have any other symptoms other than tired allot any feed back would be nice thanks, mike
Response:
What’s your bilirubin level? Try an antihistamine, quinine water, aloe vera juice, or Dead Sea Salts to take a bath in. I scratch like a dog with fleas most of the time. The above helps some, but doesn’t stop it. I don’t recommend all them at once, just try and see if any help. Good luck, David "Mike" <dishm…@yahoo.com> wrote in message

Below you will find an article which speaks to the cause or pruritis in hemodialysis patients .. You will notice .. ferritin levels .. higher .. This is the ’storage’ form of iron . Many studies show the outcome of too much iron in those with hepatitis. <<snip>> higher ferritin values are consistent with the possible role of inflammation in the development and severity of pruritus. <<snip>> Nephrol Dial Transplant 2002 Dec;17(12):2164-9 Inflammation and pruritus in haemodialysis patients. Virga G, Visentin I, La Milia V, Bonadonna A Nephrology and Dialysis Unit and. Laboratory, Provincial Hospital, Camposampiero, Padova and. Nephrology and Dialysis Unit, Provincial Hospital, Lecco, Italy. [Medline record in process] BACKGROUND:Pruritus is a common symptom among patients on haemodialysis (HD). We studied 68 HD patients to assess the role of iron deficiency, anaemia, inflammation and other common serum and dialysis parameters in pruritus. METHODS:The patients were questioned about the occurrence of pruritus at home, quantified according to frequency (‘never’, ‘occasionally’ and ‘every day’) and intensity (‘absent’, ‘moderate’ and ’severe’). The blood and serum variables considered were: haemoglobin, haematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, hypochromic red blood cells (RBC), hyperchromic RBC, microcytic RBC, macrocytic RBC, reticulocytes, iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin saturation, C-reactive protein (CRP), urea, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, albumin, total protein and glucose. We also analysed Kt/V, age and time on HD treatment. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the frequency or intensity of their pruritus, and we analysed and compared the variables between the 3 groups. RESULTS:Half (50%) of the patients reported never having pruritus, 32.4% occasionally and 17.6% every day. Pruritus was moderate in 41.2% of them and severe in 8.8%. None of the parameters considered revealed any statistically relevant differences between the three pruritus frequency groups, except for mean serum transferrin level (mg/dl) (‘never’=268+/-64 vs ‘occasionally’=244+/-40 vs ‘every day’=217+/-56, P<0.05). As for the intensity of the symptom, mean serum transferrin (268+/-64 vs 247+/-39 vs 174+/-31, P<0.001) and median ferritin levels (mg/dl) (83 (11-420) vs 98 (11-1121) vs 293 (111-471), P<0.05) showed statistically significant differences between the 3 groups, as did albumin levels (g/dl) (4.3+/-0.4 vs 4.2+/-0.4 vs 3.7+/-0.4, P<0.05). Median CRP values (mg/dl) tended to be higher in patients with more frequent (0.4 (0.3-5.5) vs 0.7 (0.3-11.4) vs 0.9 (0.3-13.5)) and more severe pruritus (0.4 (0.3-5.5) vs 0.7 (0.3-4.0) vs 2.1 (0.3-13.5)), but those differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS:Iron deficiency and anaemia seem to play no part in HD-related pruritus, whereas lower serum transferrin and albumin levels and higher ferritin values are consistent with the possible role of inflammation in the development and severity of pruritus. I’ve had a bad rash from the tx. Started using Aveeno bath – old fashioned oatmeal bath. Works. Helps a lot. Aloe vera is also helpful for skin problems, but I prefer fresh to any of the bottled commercial products, and I’d prefer a health-food store variety to the sunburn variety. The sunburn stuff helps on something a simple as sunburn, but doesn’t seem effective on more ’serious’ rashes likte poison ivy or the tx rash. Boy, I know what you mean–I called it "The Torture of the Damned"!!! I clawed myself til I bled. Mine went totally away through dietary changes. I severely limited my fat intake, gave up sugar, and started drinking lots of Gatorade and fruit juices (clear)–mostly, I just eat healthy. I think most of it was caused by overconsumption of fat though, because I can go off the diet for a day or two as long as I keep the fat at 25 g or less. I haven’t itched for months. I know I should no this but I talked to my daughter today and she said she was itchy. Is that a symptom of hep c or of the treatment? Hopefully it’s just dry skin. An article I read said the build up of bilirubin in the skin causes it. What is bilirubin and should she be experiencing this symptom so soon? WM

Gee, I’ve had itching for about 30 years now. Son of the gun, I think that’s about the same amount of time I’ve had the hep. Coincidence? Naw! Maybe your daughter just has dry skin though, it IS that time of year, you know. Elmo

Interferon will for sure dry the skin out and Ribavirin will cause itching. It is important to drink lots of water and lube up after showers, and never take hot showers. Other then that, one just has to bare with it and realize nothing is perfect when treating a disease with Chem Therapy, which is just what Interferon is, CHEMO. It was invented to treat cancer, not HCV. "worried mom" <t…@bedford.net> wrote in message

I usually take baths rather than showers and drop 2-3 vitamin E in the water and let them dissolve. seems to help. "charles" <nos…@nospam.com> wrote in message
