transplant – April 1996

Question:

I had a liver transplant 7 years ago April, due to liver failure from HCV, every year on or near my transplant date I revist the clinc for a check up. This last visit they request that I have a RNA PCR test done. Well I got my test back and after reading some of the other results I guess mine is very high, it actually was 5,580,000.  Does anyone know if a post-transplant patient can undergo the same treatments that a pre-post patient does? The reason I ask is the meds that I’m on reduces my immune system so I won’t go into rejection and intereron I beleive raises your immune system.  Looking for answers prior to my next vist.

If you haven’t already, have a look at: bit.listserv.transplant which is a mirror copy of the TRNSPLNT listserv group http://trnsplnt.org This subject you inquired about has been discussed there recently, though I don’t know if there’s anything current. Anyway, two longtime, on-line friends of mine are participating members of that list (one had a transplant just recently and the other had a living donor transplant several years ago) and I’m sure they (and others) will answer your question, since one of them had his doctor propose maintenance therapy due to advancing fibrosis. From what I’ve gathered, it’s not a good idea to do the same tx as for a pre-transplant liver–people have reported their liver being trashed–though low dose maintenance therapy may be a possibility. BTW, 5,580,000 is not really very high. VERY high is when you’re over 10 million and certainly at 20 or 60 million. These are all real viral loads that people have reported.
